Swiss Machining

CNC Swiss machining brings additional precision and efficiency to production operations. The principle behind the swiss machine is that the bar moves to the tool rather than the tool moving to the bar (in the Z direction). This vastly reduces the amount of deflection during precision swiss machining since the cutting action occurs closer to the guide bushing. This superior stability translates into fewer deflections and greater precision, making CNC Swiss machining ideal for complex projects with tight tolerances especially for small or thin components.

Swiss Machining Process

Generally, Swiss Machines have one or two spindles.

This allows the Swiss Machining lathes to be fast and efficient in creating custom parts some in as little as 10-15 seconds. This makes them great for large production runs on small diameter parts.

CNC Swiss machining allows for the lathe to move a component along several different axes, giving the part a precise cut with the tightest tolerances. Much like with 5-axis machining, Swiss machining lathes can rotate a component along 5 different axes, allowing for the most accurate cut for each component.

Swiss Machining IS Perfect For

One of the key benefits of Swiss Style Machining is the ability to machine smaller, longer and more complex parts. In other forms of machining, the tool approaches the open turning part whereas in Swiss Machining the part is guided and supported to the tool which allows for excellent accuracy for longer, thinner components and small parts however complex. The unique design also allows for the ability to perform simultaneous turning and milling as the workpiece moves instead the tool. Not only can both turning and milling operations be performed on the Swiss machine, the commonly can be performed simultaneously allowing for incredible efficiency and throughput.

Capability

Our Swiss-Type CNC lathes are perfect for machining precision parts with complex configurations and profiles in one setup incredibly fast. The SB-20R Type G offers impressive machining versatility within a compact footprint. The SB series main spindle platen includes six turning tools, two fixed high-speed ER11 spindles for cross working plus a further three modular cross power driven stations that accept a variety of cartridge attachments. The flexibility of the SB-20R Type G is further enhanced by its ability to switch between guide bush mode (Swiss type) and non-guide bush mode. The fully independent sub-spindle with C axis control coupled with driven tool capability across all four back working stations further enhances the machining capability of the SB series.

SB-20R Type G run together with our SR-32JM which has capability of high precision complex machining, we can meet the different needs of most industries at a very high level of productivity. We are able to hold very tight tolerances using customary ground bar stock and excellent part finishes. Our typical lot size is around 3000 pieces but we are also using these machines effectively for prototyping.

Applications

A Swiss Turning Machine, also called a Swiss Style Lathe or "Swiss Type" machine is a type of turning machine (lathe) capable of producing high production rates in small parts (1.25” diameter and under). They are especially effective in parts that are long and thin given the unique design allowing for the tooling to perform machining operations in a very close proximity to the supporting collet/guide bushing. Coupled with other unique attachments such as thread whirling many highly accurate, mass produced small parts can be produced easily.Swiss machining can be used for a wide variety of applications, including:
